Yay for Soliz, Boo for Warren: Obama Disappoints Again on Gay Inclusion

To use the word disappointment in conjunction with Obama's decision to choose Rick Warren for a place of honor during the Inauguration is to greatly understate the feelings and dismay of so many in the Gay and Lesbian community, as well as family members, loved ones, supporters, allies and friends.

Perhaps he should also invite a leader or two to represent some anti-semitic, racist philosophies, organizations and churches. Maybe a Grand Wizard of the KKK to make sure everyone feels 'included' and to 'expand the dialogue' on such a prominent symbolic day. For shame. Truly Pathetic and inexcusable. More proof of his embrace of homophobes and homophobia. The message is clear: To hell with civil rights and inclusion for gay people. The proof is in the deeds, not the words.

Even Shepard Fairey, who created the iconic Hope Change Progress posters for Obama is disgusted. He will donate profits from his Obama Inauguration Poster to Pro-Gay Rights / Pro-Gay Marriage / Anti-Prop 8 efforts.

First they came

In Germany, they came first for the Communists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist;
And then they came for the trade unionists, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist;
And then they came for the Jews, And I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew;
And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up.
"First they came…" is attributed to German Pastor Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) about the inactivity of German citizens and intellectuals following the Nazi rise to power and the purging of their chosen targets, group after group. It couldn't be more appropriate these days and in recent years.

Day Without a Gay 12/10/08 : Call to Action/Economic Boycott

December 10th 2008: Day Without a Gay. via Join the Impact.com

Day without a Gay is taking a new spin on the concept of a boycott — already enacted by "A Day without Mexicans" in recent civil rights efforts — to show the effects on every day commerce and life when everyone gay disappears from that commerce and economy.

During the busy shopping season where analysts have year over year numbers, we want to watch the graph dip as we take our tax dollars and keep them. Instead, we will give to the organizations that need our time and help. We are taxpaying citizens who contribute to this economy. We deserve legal protections from our government and marriage provides 10,000+ legal protections that are not awarded to our families! Read Joel Stein’s Call to Action and Visit DayWithoutAGay.org

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Celebrate our differences.
Respect our Equality.

:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

There was some confusion about the date, but two organizations proposed this great initiative and we combined into one. On December 10th, we ask that the LGBTQ community (and its supporters) Call in Gay! Don’t go to work, don’t consume, don’t contribute to this economy at all…instead, contribute to your community through volunteer work, community outreach, and social outreach. (Remember the Date will be December 10th NOT the 5th)

January 10th, 2009: National Protest. Let’s do this again! We’ve done so much with only one week of planning. Now imagine what we can do with 2 months! It’s time we get out and protest all of the anti-gay ballot initiatives from 2008 AND the initiatives from 2004: DOMA. DOMA exists in 37 states throughout our country! Full equality will not exist with DOMA. We need to bring the nation’s attention back to this, keep their attention on Prop 8’s revoking of rights, and keep giving this country a reason to talk!

Also, we ask that everyone who can, show your support for equality: Light up this nation with the Blue For Equality Movement! Display a BLUE LIGHT in your front porch, window or store front to show support for EQUALITY FOR ALL.

Help show the gay community that they are not alone! Get the word out and show your colors for equality!

When we look at the surface we are all DIFFERENT
(and this should be celebrated!).
When we go deeper we are all the same and all deserve to be treated with EQUALITY.

A Patriot's Message to the Right-wing & Republican Party

Came across this among the responses to David Broder's newest column entitled "The GOP Loses Ground" at the Washington Post website.
charliemunn wrote:

I'm an average, Independent American who retired from the USAF. I don't believe in pre-emptive wars, and do believe in fiscal responsibility. I hate Big Money Lobby and our bought and paid for, do nothing, blow hard congress. Because I retired from the USAF, wife and I have good health care which mimics socialized medicine. We've also long advocated single pay universal health care, strong unions, and breaking up large corporations such as GM, et al, into small worker owned and managed co-ops. That is, we are capitalist who believe in the fundamentals of Adam Smith and David Hume. Smith and Hume firmly believed in small business, either family owned or worker owned, as well as tight government regulations. They did not believe in large corporations which must grow or die and are inherently unsustainable.

WISE, VA - JULY 26, 2008: Patients await dental care at the Remote Area Medical (RAM), clinic July 26, 2008 in Wise, Virginia. The free clinic, which lasts 2 1/2 days, is the largest of its kind in the nation, and organizers expected to treat more than 2,500 people over the weekend, mostly providing dental and vision services. Residents of the If polled, I'll tell you I'm a conservative after the style of Einsenhower. Based upon that one question, today's so-called "republican" would incorrectly label me as center right. But based upon all of my other beliefs, that so-called "republican" would call me a communist, or worse. That is, you and your ilk just don't get it. Most of you are ideological Reaganista's who pull your "beliefs" out of thin air. You spend government money like drunken sailors, never questioning your leaders and seem to be intent on destroying unions, and the blue collar working class who built this country. Yet you claim to believe in fiscal responsibility and the working man. That's obviously a blatant lie that you either can't see, or refuse to admit. Either way, I don't want that kind of person in our government. My last republican vote was for George H. W. Bush when he was candidate for the republican party. When that phony old B movie star won, then made our country into a debtor nation, I suspected it signaled the end of the republican party.

Although I'm not that happy with spineless, bought and paid for democrats, I now belong to the Obama movement. We intend to continue to put pressure on all politicians, including Obama. We'll only vote for those who work against Big Money Lobby, and for We The People, and we don't give a damn what you call us.
Another poster responded: "Bravo, Airman."

Bravo, indeed.

Broder's column is here. It's impossible to link to the Airman's post in the comments section because the page numbers shift as new comments are posted. Look for the posts by "charliemunn" and "Attucks".

Residents of the "coal counties" of Appalachia are some of the most impoverished in the nation, and most are either underinsured or have no health insurance at all. For many, the RAM clinic is the only medical care they may receive each year.

We Shall / Must / Will Overcome

Hat tip and thanks to doubting thom for a thoughtful entry:
Judith Warner’s most recent New York Times column, “What It Felt Like to Be Equal.” The quotes Warner shares from gay people who were directly affected by the passage of Prop. 8, about feeling that gays are now perhaps the only group it is okay to publicly disdain and legally discriminate against, and how the otherwise historic election of Barack Obama can feel painfully hollow, capture exactly how I have been feeling since last Tuesday.
Warm hugs to Keith Olbermann again for his "Special Comment" on Countdown:

Outing the Haters & Boycotting the Homophobes: Californians Against Hate Dishonor Roll

The Californians Against Hate Dishonor Roll.

Californians Against Hate want the country to know who gave the $36 million! to the Yes on Proposition 8 campaign that took away existing same-sex marriage rights in California. They have posted all major donors on their web site who gave $5000.00 and more, many much more! [Just imagine what better use $36 Million Dollars could be put to!]

They have gleaned public information from the California Secretary of State’s Office and added telephone numbers and web sites when available. There is also included commentary on some of the more interesting and controversial donors, such as the founder of Blackwater whose family happens to be long-time family friends and Wyoming neighbors of Dick & Lynn Cheney (parents to a lesbian daughter, Mary Cheney). Individuals and businesses gave a vast amount of money to take away citizens rights and equality under the law, and we want you to know who they are.

Fieldstead & Co. is a company owned by the heir of the Home Savings & Loan fortune, Howard "Howie" Ahmanson, Jr. Ahmanson is a major contributor to numerous far right religious political causes. His past association with R.J. Rushdoony’s controversial Christian Reconstructionist movement was an early influence on Ahmanson’s political viewpoint. Ahmanson has stated that his “goal is the total integration of biblical law into our lives.”

Referring to his close friend Rashdoony, Ahmanson is reported to have “never supported his mentor’s calls for the death penalty for homosexuals,” rather, as the Orange County Register reported many years later in 2004, “he stops just short of condemning the idea”, saying that he “no longer consider[s] [it] essential” to stone people who are deemed to have committed certain immoral acts. Ahmanson and his wife Roberta completed a four part interview with the Orange County Register in 2004 in an attempt to clarify the rumors that swirled around them. Ahmanson has connections with three other major donors on this list: Roland Hinz, Robert Hurtt and Edward Atsinger III, who have pooled their money to support like-minded candidates and causes through the Capitol Commonwealth Group (CCG) and Allied Business PAC. They spent more than $3,600,000 back in the 1992 election cycle alone.[1]

John Templeton, Jr. is the son of the late John Marks Templeton. John, Sr. was born in Winchester, Tennessee in 1912, and made his fortune through the Templeton Funds that he started and later sold in 1992 to Franklin Group for $440 million. John, Jr. is now the President of the John Templeton Foundation which has nearly $1.5 billion in assets, and gave away $70 million in grants in 2007. The Foundation funds research into “life’s biggest questions,” including science, religion, ultimate reality and wisdom.

John Templeton, Jr. founded and is Chairman of 'Let Freedom Ring, Inc. ' (www.letfreedomringusa.com), a far right think-tank that he set up in 2004 with a $1 million donation. [14] He is a member of the Cradle of Liberty Council of the Boy Scouts of America, which made news when they were forced to leave their Philadelphia headquarters due to a conflict between Philadelphia’s non-discrimination policy, and that of the Boy Scouts, which allows discrimination of gays. Legal proceedings continue on the case. [12] [13]

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) is headed by syndicated columnist Maggie Gallagher, President and Brian Brown, Executive Director. Gallagher has worked for several other organizations before founding NOM. She is best known for being in the center of a (George W. ) Bush Administration scandal. She had a $21,500 contract with the Health and Human Services Department in 2002 to help promote the administration’s $300 million “healthy marriage” initiative, but did not disclose her contract and was using her column to promote the program. Gallagher attempted to withhold this information until she finally admitted the conflict four years later. [2]

Due to its sizeable early financial support of ProtectMarriage.com, NOM is chiefly responsible for the qualification of Proposition 8. Their funds made it possible to hire the signature gathering firm of Bader and Associates. Bader then was able to hire hundreds of professional petition circulators to collect the necessary signatures to qualify Proposition 8 for the November ballot. The Protect Marriage Campaign spent $1,227,263 with the Bader organization alone between January and June of 2008.

[17] He was made wealthy through his family business, Bolthouse Farms, the 2nd largest producer of carrots in the world. He helped expand the business into beverages and salad dressings, and in 2005 sold 72% of the business to Madison Dearborn Partners, a Chicago-based private equity firm. 28% of Bolthouse Farms is now owned by Bolthouse's daughter and son-in-law, Andre Radandt, who is the company's Chairman. Bolthouse Farms recently took significant steps to demonstrate that it is committed to diversity, including those in the LGBT community. They recently extended medical benefits to same sex partners of employees, and have given generously to several national and California LGBT organizations.

Allyson Weinberg, Santa Rosa Valley, CA

$12,500
Allyson Weinberg gave: $12,500 on 4/4/08

Allyson Weinberg has been in the limelight before. Back in 2004, Weinberg and her husband Denny (a senior executive for WellPoint, the nation’s second largest insurer at the time), sued the United Way of Ventura County, stating they were lied to about the United Way policy that forbade donations to any organization that discriminated against others. Due to the court ruling that allowed the Boy Scouts to discriminate against gays and atheists, the United Way chose to no longer support them as their own guidelines prohibited such support based on discrimination. The Weinberg’s had agreed to head a nationwide campaign for United Way to find donors, as well as match donations, but when United Way chose to change its donation policies towards the Boy Scouts, the Weinberg’s, for a number of different reasons, decided to sue.
